Adolescents Sports Performance

Our owner Greg Sterner, Board Certified Orthopedic Clinical Specialist in Physical Therapy supervises all of San Diego Sports Physical Therapy adolescent sports performance programs. This is what separates us from “Big Box Training Centers” such as Velocity Sports Performance.

Who would you rather trust your son’s or daughter’s physical well-being to, a licensed physical therapist or a personal trainer? Greg is not only a licensed physical therapist but he is also a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist through the National Strength and Conditioning Association, which is a better suited training background for training competitive athletes of all ages.

While Greg was still working as an Advanced Clinician at Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla, he had the pleasure of also working as a Sports Performance coach under the guidance of Justin Fransdon at Athleticism. Dean Brittenham, founder of Elite Athleticism states that “Great Athletes Are Not Born, They Are Made”.

San Diego Sports Physical Therapy utilizes a combination of: Functional Movement Screening, Dynamic Warm Ups, Functional and Olympic Weight Training, Speed and Agility Training, Dynamic Balance Training,  Active Isolated Stretching techniques and Hand-Eye-Reflex Training to achieve:

  • Running Faster
  • Changing Direction Quickly
  • Jumping Higher
  • Greater Range of Motion in Joints (which equal increased Force or Power)
  • Increase Strength and Power
  • Coordination of Hands, Eyes and Feet
  • Highly Refined Balance Mechanisms
  • Decreased Chance of ACL Injuries (especially in our young female athletes)
  • Optimize the Neuromuscular System

The great performers in all sports are the athletes who possess the highest level of athletic skills or Athleticism. The level to which you can learn and perfect sports specific skill is directly proportional to your level of athletic skills. Our #1 responsibility to our athletes is to safely periodize their training parameters to achieve superior results on the field, court, ocean, pool, or road.

San Diego Sports Physical Therapy utilizes the teaching and training methods of Elite Athleticism founder Dean Brittenham. Dean is the former Track and Field Coach for the University of Nebraska and former Director of Elite Athleticism program at Scripps Clinic in La Jolla, CA. Greg has had the pleasure of seeing Dean’s methods work with individuals and team sports, both at the amateur and professional levels. Greg prides himself on being a catalyst in helping San Diego youth achieve superior athleticism while keeping their joints healthy and injury free.

The following excerpts are from the book ‘The Young Athlete’ written by Jordan D. Metzl, M.D., who is co-founder and medical director of the Hospital for Special Surgery’s Sports Medicine Institute for Young Athletes. Greg Sterner, PT has had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Metzl and closely working with young athletes in Dr. Metzl’s care while being employed as a licensed physical therapist.

“Amateur sports used to mean varsity and JV teams in high school and college, but today more than thirty million kids play on a wide range of recreational and competitive or select teams, and at younger and younger ages. Parents want to encourage safe sports for their children, both on the field and off”.
